In less than a year I've purchased my second new Saturn. My first one was in August 2008. A beautiful Ocean Mist Aura XR with a sunroof. Wow! What a car! I didn't know they made them THIS well!
I'd been eyeing the Saturn Sky for quite some time and decided that if I was going to buy one, it would either be now or never. The coming model year could also very well be the last year of its production and there will probably be a price increase as well.
Well, this past Saturday, I drove over to one of the Saturn stores in our area because they had THE EXACT Sky I imagined wanting to own. A Silver Pearl 2008 Sky Red Line w. 5 speed manual transmission. It is the classic roadster color dating back to the 1920's / 1930's Mercedes and Auto Union (Audi, et al) race cars of that era. The factory upgraded chrome alloy wheels, decklid spoiler and stereo w. Monsoon were icing on the cake. Wow! What a car! I'm hanging onto this one forever!
The history of my decision can be traced back to circa 1969. I was only 9 years old at the time but I remember it very clearly. My Father took me to the International Automobile Show (IAA) in Frankfurt, Germany and we sat in an orange Opel GT. My Father considered purchasing one because it was a great looking car, plus it was a GM and we already owned two Opel Rekord models (model A, ca. 1964, and model C, ca. 1967) which my parents (and I) liked an awful lot. In the end, however, he decided not to buy one. Perhaps he thought two Opels were enough at the time? (4 years later he added a Fiat 850 Sport Coupe to the stable of our two Opel Rekords).
So, here I am today, a "wild child" of the '60's and '70's - almost 50 and all grown up - allegedly, yet, still holding onto to a dream from childhood of being able to step into my Father's shoes and to own a real Opel GT.
In 1987 I gave up on GM and went to Honda. In 2008 I came back to Saturn / GM. In 22 years I've come full circle now that I own a Saturn Sky / Opel GT and a Saturn Aura XR / Opel Vectra (cousin). BTW, I traded in a Honda on my new Saturn Sky Red Line. Life is funny that way. -)
