Saturns keep going and going and going and…

In July of 1990, the first Saturn – a metallic red S-Series sedan – rolled off the assembly line in Spring Hill. This past December, we delivered the 4 millionth Saturn in the United States – a black 3-door Astra XR that was purchased by Philip Lieffers at Saturn of Traverse City, Mich. That’s a lot of time and a lot of vehicles. (The photo above show Phil and his wife Mary Bowden.)

As we passed that milestone, we wondered how many of those vehicles are still on the road. So, we did a little research found that more than 83 percent of all the Saturn’s ever sold in the U.S are still registered.

That’s incredible. Across America, more than 3.3 million S-Series, L-Series, Vues, Ions, Relays, Skys, Auras, Outlooks and Astras are currently in operation, according data collected from R.L. Polk.

There have always been plenty of reasons to by a Saturn – value, fuel economy, safety and the great retail experience, just to name a few. That kind of durability – 8 out of 10 still going strong – may be the best testament yet to the wisdom of buying a Saturn.

On this site, we’ve heard about some amazing stories about Saturns lasting for 250,000 or even 300,000 miles. That’s a great tribute to the people who designed and built our vehicles over the years, and also to the owners and retail service staffs who maintained the vehicles so meticulously.

We extend our warmest thanks to all 4 million people who put their faith in us. We also appreciate the many, many people who selected a used Saturn. You are an integral part of what make the Saturn brand so special.

We have owned nothing but Saturns since 1990 when they first came out. These cars offer the best of both worlds. Well above average reliability with lower priced parts. I have a 1997 SC2 coupe with 160,000 miles and have only replaced a few routine parts. It still has the original rear brake shoes. No leaks and runs great. My wife has a 2000 LS1 with 120,000 miles. It too has been a good car. I don,t think it has been as reliable as the old one, but still well above average. I hope Penske will keep the company alive and it will go back to its roots. I am glad to see Saturn separate from General Motors, as they got too generic with parts and consruction on later models. I'm going to drive my old coupe until it quits!

That's nice to hear! I agree that the reasons for buying the saturn are real... for I do own a Saturn before and A'm planning to buy a Saturn... for its engine performance, mileage and its car parts (rocker flares) never fails me... :D

I heard news that Penske has made a deal to buy the Saturn brand, I hope it is true and that Saturn lives on. I have two older Saturn models and love them both. I can believe that 83% are still going strong. I have a 94 SL1 with over 200,000 miles on it and it still averages me 28-30 miles to the gallon, GOOD LUCK SATURN

Mike,

That's freaking AWESOME! Wow, 83%! Very cool and yes, I agree that is a great tribute to all those involved with Saturn.

Cheers, Here's to 4 million more Saturn vehicles on the road!

Rob
