The Opel brand stands for 'Made in Germany', and today developed, produces and sells vehicles worldwide. Opel was founded in 1862 in Ruesselsheim, Germany by Adam Opel. He started to manufacture high-quality sewing machines in volume and the company later became a leading producer of bicycles before assuming its current role as one of the world’s largest producers of automobile.
In 2008, some 1,4 million Opel cars, commercial vehicles and component sets were produced in thirteen production and assembly operations in eight countries in Western and Central Europe. Outside Europe, products bearing the Opel brand – including vehicles based on German engineering – are manufactured in 13 plants worldwide.
Opel vehicles currently are sold in more than 20 countries outside of Europe. In addition, modified Opel models are sold in ten other countries under the Buick (North America & China) and Chevrolet (Latin America) brands.
Since its inception in 1862, Opel has set out to make technology affordable and widely available to a large segment of society. This vision has remained constant from its roots as a sewing machine manufacturer, its subsequent expansion to bicycles and today remains at the heart of all automotive product development.
