Comment by Tony Olivas on July 28, 2009 at 3:58pm: Just purchased a 5dr XR twilight blue after researching for months. I drove 400 miles to pick it up in this color. This car really is a hidden secret. Handles beautifully with a solid ride and build quality of the interior rivals vehicles costing thousands more. I agree on comments on the minimal low end grunt but it more than makes up for it with a revvy engine that, once past 2k rpm, has excellent zip. No complaints! It will go well beyond freeway speed levels without breaking a sweat. Great chassis! Has anyone looked in to going to Mexico for performance adds? The astra is sold in Mexico as a chevy, same exact car. I've seen that they sell the 2 liter turbo version there.

Regarding the transmission - YES - the automatic version shifts into neutral when you are stopped for a certain length of time & this is addressed in the manual, I believe.

Comment by David K. on July 19, 2009 at 7:21pm: GTOken, I think I know what you mean... The rear brakes are definitely much more engaging than other vehicles I've ever had. I kinda like it myself since it feels like all 4 brakes are active versus other cars (and trucks) I've driven that the front wheels did 90% of the actual work stopping. The rear end on the Astra even seems to tuck itself a bit when braking hard - quite a nice feel if I may say so myself! I think at least some of what you're describing might be by design. I have a manual tranny so I cannot comment on the automatic/neutral sensation..

And when I let off there seem to be a slight hesitation before they completely let go of the rotors. Someone told me the auto trans Astras go into neutral when stopped. Not sure if that it what is causing the weird sensation or not.

Comment by David K. on July 19, 2009 at 10:21am: GTOken, by brakes 'not feeling right', do you mean sensitive? On my Astra, the brakes are probably the most responsive in a car I've ever owned. It can stop on a dime... No sponginess at all -- they're "right there" and quite more than adequate for quick stops.
